USS News (Vol. 2, No. 1) - Jan. 1999

The Utopian Senior Society News begins the New Year with a recap of 1998. In 1998, Carmen, Xamara, Bill and Henry reunited at the Miami Happy Hour Mini-Reunion on November 20th and Carol and Michelle met in Burbank at the 1st Southern California Mini-Reunion on October 29th. Carmen and Xamara have both been to see Inge in New York. Hopefully, 1999 will bring more classmates together for our 30th Year Reunion! Who can believe that so many years have gone by! It hardly seems possible!

The Class of 1969 is scattered all over the world, just as we might have imagined. Many are yet to be found and we are actively looking for them. How many will be found in 1999 has yet to be determined. Who have we found? Where are they now?

Who will we find in 1999? Will we have a 30th Reunion? Will we meet with other ASMers at mini-reunions?

I hope you all have the opportunity to attend an ASM mini-reunion. If one is not scheduled near you, organize it yourself. All you have to do is make a reservation and e-mail any ASMers who live or work near you. In California, people will drive long distances through rush hour traffic to meet with perfect strangers. We all feel it is worth it! It doesn't matter when a person attended ASM, the stories are similar, the hangouts are the same, the connection is so warm and energizing, you have to experience it to understand!

If you want to find out which other ASMers are in your area, let me know and I'll try to help you create an e-mail list. It is really a great feeling to meet with other ASMers!

Remembering 1969: In the summer of 1969, astronauts from the planet Earth first set foot on the moon: "One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." In the fall of 1999, NASA's Mars Polar Lander is scheduled to land on the planet Mars. When it launches from Kennedy Space Center this month, a part of ASM history and a part of each of you goes with it. Mars Polar Lander is taking the names of all the American School of Madrid 1969 graduates on its journey. Launch is scheduled for January 3rd , but current weather predictions indicate that it may be delayed. For more information on Mars Polar Lander, visit http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msp98 .

Quote of the Month: "The greatest adventure, is what lies ahead. Today and tomorrow, have yet to be said. The chances, the changes, are all yours to make. The mold of your life is in your hands to break." Jules Bass, from the Rankin/Bass Production of "The Hobbit".

Happy New Year everybody! May 1999 be the best possible year for all of you!
