Well, it is that
time of year again. "Back to School" brings a smile and a tear to the proud
parents sending their child to school for the first time. It brings happy anticipation to
the students returning to the joys of academics after a long hard summer ... their groans
and whining do not fool us! Parents everywhere are smiling and thinking, "Yes! We
made it!" and trying not to think about the Back to School bills. Teachers are
anxious to get back into the routine. Bulletin boards are ready, lessons are planned,
teacher in-services are in progress ... another year will have flown by before we realize
it!
Xamara Villar writes: "It has been great to hear from you after
almost 30 years! Since our graduation in 1969 - time flies! I am living in Miami (since
1981). I still go to Spain every year for my sister married a "Madrileño" and
my mom's family is from Asturias, so we still have family there. I am a Marketing Officer
of a Swiss Bank in Miami. I travel a lot to South and Central America. I have not married.
I still remember the good-old times at ASM!"
Xamara also told me that she has seen Ritchie Daugherty in Miami (he is in
banking as well) and Luis Diaz in Madrid (he is a CPA). She is going to try to relocate
them.
Carmen Pickett (Catala) is also living in Miami and Ingeborg Möller is
working for the United Nations and lives in New York City.
Connie Guzman (Coleman) lives in Munich, Germany. She writes: "Hello
there. Do you remember the Easter Holiday down to Torremolinos? How are you, where are
you? I don't have an email address yet, but it would be wonderful if you'd please
write."
Turns out that Connie e-mailed me from Southampton, New York. She was
visiting family and decided to see if ASM had a web site. She found my entries at Gus's
site <http://www.gutech.com/asm> in the guestbook and on the 1969 alumni page and
e-mailed me. See the importance of getting your names listed?! Connie was sending from an
AOL address so I plugged the address into my "Buddy List" and caught her on-line
the following morning! We sent instant messages back and forth and we partially caught up
on 29 years. She will be returning to Munich on September 6th and does not yet have
Internet access and e-mail.
Connie met her husband in Paris (he is American), they married in 1972 and
have been together since. They have two children (ages 16 and 12) and have lived in
Germany for almost 20 years. They have a film production company in Munich.
Jim ("Jamie") Kevlin lives in Pottsville, PA and is the editor
for the Herald and Republican Newspapers. He also writes a newsletter about Pottsville and
Schuylkill County. Check it out at http://www.pottsville.com.
Jamie writes: "Have been here since 1990. Had been working on the
Buffalo News and before that in upstate New York and New England. Good times. Pottsville
is John O'Hara's "Gibbsville," and M.J. and I have an old place up in the
(former) mansion district that's a delight. We enjoy country living -- no crime, traffic
or pollution -- and yet we're 2 hours from NYC, 90 minutes from Philly, 2 hours from
Baltimore and 3 from D.C., so it's worked out pretty well. Have also been developing The
REPUBLICAN & Herald as a launching pad/table of contents to New Media offerings,
audiotext and the Web. No one else is doing this, so have been doing quite a bit of
speaking around the U.S. and occasionally in Europe. Have also been president of
Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors and a member of the state's First Amendment
Coalition, so get out and about quite a bit. After living hither, thither and yon growing
up, I do savor small-town life, although it has its challenges. Dennis Oulahan, John
Cabrera and Jim Karna have been among the folks from ASM who have visited me here over the
years."
Speaking of Jim Karna, I recently discovered that he had signed the guest
book on the "Unofficial" ASM site. He is now the Class Agent for the Class of
'68. If you are in contact with anyone from '68, please tell them to contact Jim.
The ASM sites are:
> (Official site)
> ("Unofficial" site)
Other ASM classes are creating their own web sites. I would like to put
one together for the class of '69 and would welcome any ideas (or help)! Some of the
things I would like to see on a Class of '69 website are photos (then and now), stories
about ASM and growing up, mini bios (what we are doing now and how we got there). I have
concerns about the quantity and type of information that should be published on-line and
would like input from the rest of you.
As a teacher, I would like the site to be somewhat educational for
students, particularly those at the American School of Madrid today and my students at
Montessori School of Corona and St. Catherine of Alexandria. Our growing up experiences
were so varied and we scattered all over the world after graduation. Today, we are adults
- almost senior citizens (not!) - with a variety of different experiences to share.
I would also like to see us get together sometime in '99 for a 30th
reunion (30th?!?!? - no way!). How about a combined reunion with the class of '68? Any
suggestions? Please let me know what you think! Any ideas about where and when? Would
anyone like to coordinate it? Pleeease! :-)
If you contact anyone from the Class of '69 (even if they did not graduate
in Madrid) please have them contact me. Keep spreading the word about the ASM sites and
don't forget to fill in the questionnaires.
Salud, amor y pesetas! Y tiempo para gastarlas!
