ASMers are still popping up everywhere,
although our leads for classmates from the Sixties seem to be slowing a bit. If anyone has
any leads, please let the Class Agents know. There are a few people who have been located,
but have not yet responded with input for this newsletter. Hopefully the New Year will
bring us news from Alex de la Cal and Ken Smith from 1970; Leslie Smith, Janet Kevlin and
Alberto Darna from 1968; Connie Rodriguez, Sarita Gomez-Mola, and Mary Caram from 1967;
Mimi Johnson from 1966; Arthur David Robinson from 1965; Mark Johnson from 1964; and Bill
Caram from 1963. Who else will we find in '99?
ASM Alumni from the sixties are located in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois,
Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Virginia, England, Germany, Panama, and Spain.
ASMers of various years have been meeting for mini-reunions. It is really great when
people get together and share memories and yearbooks from the various years. We have so
much in common! Check out the reunion news at http://www.gutech.com/asm/asmreu.htm . You
will find pictures of Aurelio Cancio '63, Rafael Diaz-Balart '68, Carol Farron '69,
Michelle Fearey LaGue '69, Bill Mock '69, Carmen Pickett '69, Ken Smith '70, Henry Sanz
'69 and Xamara Villar '69.
Many, many thanks to Gus Gonzalez '83 for the excellent job he does with the ASM
Unofficial Pages. He had photos processed and scanned in within four days of the Miami
reunion!
Anyone can schedule a mini-reunion. California and Florida are currently the reunion hot
spots, because many alumni are located in those two sunny locations. If you travel to
either of those States, check out the email directory page http://www.gutech.com/asm/asmemail.htm
for alumni listed by State. Simply e-mail the people in the area you will be
travelling and plan an informal get together. That is all it takes! Future States will be
added soon.
We have also been meeting (or trying to meet) in the chat room at http://www.gutech.com/asm . On November 29th, Aurelio
Cancio '63 and Henry Sanz '69 chatted with Gus Gonzalez '83. Peg Danos '67, Carmen Marin
'67, Joanne Hattrick '69, and Michelle Fearey LaGue '69 also tried to join the chat as did
many from other years.
All these get-togethers and chats are paving the way for the big reunion in Madrid in
2001. Keep checking the two ASM websites http://www.amerschmad.org
and http://www.gutech.com/asm for further
information!
And now, more voices from the sixties:
From Gary "Oakie" Johnson ('68)
What have I been up to? Well, I graduated from law school and spent most of my career in
Phillips Petroleum Company's legal department. I spent three years in Los Angeles as
regional director for Coopers & Lybrand's Sales & Use Tax group. I have been in
private practice since 1990 in Denver, Colorado.
Gary can be contacted at GC1Johnson@aol.com
From Jim Karna ('68)
Thank you for the wonderful work in putting together this newsletter. After leaving ASM in
1967 my family moved to New Jersey and then to Houston, Texas, where I live today. Upon
graduating from college, I did some wandering around but eventually ended up going to law
school.
I graduated from Univ. of Houston Law School in 1981. I first worked for a small Houston
law firm with an international commercial practice. Since 1986, I have worked as in-house
counsel for Aramco Services Company, an oil services company. I specialize in
international business matters but my work is really quite varied and has included
immigration matters and even medical malpractice cases.
I am married. My wife Carol is a programmer who works for a chemical company here. Our
son, age 5 and my stepdaughter, age 12 live with us. I also have a 19 year old son from my
first marriage who is in college and hopes to be a musician.
I remain an avid swimmer, probably because of the great times I had swimming in the pools
in Madrid with fellow ASM'ers. I would love to hear from any faculty, staff, students from
the classes of 67, 68, 69.
Jim is the Class Agent for '68 and can be contacted at jkarna@aramco.com
From Bettina (Guidotti) Whitley ('67)
My name is Bettina Whitley (maiden name Guidotti). I went to Spain in 1963 because my
father is Spanish and he retired there. My mother still lives there with my brother, who
married a Malaguena. They live in Malaga. I lived in Madrid until 1968. I moved to the US
in 1968 when I married an American I met in Madrid. We divorced after a long marriage and
he died in a motorcycle accident. I have one son, age 26 and a granddaughter by him who is
18 months.
I have lived in Texas for 30 years. So I am practically
native. My second husband and I have been married 12 years. We have no children together.
He is a psychologist and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I live in a north
suburb of Houston. It is a wooded area with lots of parks and trees. My hobbies are
horses, African cichlids (fish), pond fish, gardening and birding.
Bettina can be contacted at jbwhit@flash.net
From Robert Zimmermann ('67)
I am married to a Catalana and have one daughter who recently graduated from college. I
have a B.A. and M.A. in Geography and have spent over twenty years teaching history and
geography, principally, at high schools and community colleges in Barcelona, Nassau,
Chicago and New York City. Most of these years have been spent in Chicago where I have
lived because it is where I found a job. Since leaving teaching four years ago I have
become involved in writing. I have published books for students on Sri Lanka and The
Gambia and am now working on a guidebook to the buildings of the Catalan architect, Antoni
Gaudi. I spend winters and springs in Barcelona and summer and fall in Chicago and
south-west Michigan.
Robert does not have an e-mail address. Classmates may contact Peg Danos
Castelli at pfjc419@idt.net (Class Agent '67)
for further information.
From Aurelio J. Cancio ('63)
I think I did make a mistake on the years I was at ASM .... Let's see, I finished Spanish
Bachillerato in 1962, not 61... Then I enrolled in the fall of 62 at ASM and stayed until
January '63. That makes me from the class of '63, right? Hope this clarifies the
situation.
I am originally from Cuba. Went to Spain in 1959 and stayed there until 1968, not counting
the year I spent at Villanova Univ., after which I returned to Madrid, until 1968, then I
definitely left Spain to go to Puerto Rico. From there I came to Miami in 1974. I married
in Puerto Rico and have two daughters (25 and 21). The oldest was born in PR while the
youngest came to this world in Miami. Susana graduated from International Fine Arts
College with a degree of Interior Designer; Maria went to technical school where she
became a nail technician. She's getting married next Saturday, the 7th of November.
I have been a plumber for the past 23 years...(is a dirty work but somebody has to do
it...). I freelance as a web page designer; computer and internet consultant, do upgrades
and in a lesser note, teach operating systems, especially Win95, Internet and Microsoft
Office.
Nope...I don't think I am related to Humberto Cancio, but on the other hand...who knows???
I just read the sad news about Willie MacLean...I didn't know he passed away. He was a
friend of mine while I was in Spain. I attended several parties at his house. There's
always a sad side of every happy thing.
Well I hope I have provided you with enough info about
myself. Even if I did not attend a full year at ASM, I do feel I am a graduate from there,
since the Spanish HS do not have the close relationship that exists in ASM. I have very
good memories about the short time I stayed there ... even if the memories are sparse. I
hope to meet more ASM ex-students from the 60's...
Aurelio can be contacted at: ajcancio@bellsouth.net
Aurelio also comments on the Miami Reunion (Nov. 20th, 1998):
I noticed people looking at us with strange faces...No wonder, since we weren't there...We
weren't at Fat Tuesday at all! We crossed the time barrier and went back to ASM and being
teenagers. Someone said that remembering is like living again...that's what we were
doing... No matter if we were from '63, '69, '74, '83 or '91...we all were the same age
and in the same place...roaming the halls of the school...playing in the empty lot at
front of Dr. Fleming...going to the Moncloa...or the Tascas...but we weren't at Fat
Tuesday...that feeling is what it is all about! I hope we can repeat the experience and
keep alive the ASM reunions.
