Voice of the Sixties (Vol. 1, No. 1) - Oct. 1998

by Michelle (Fearey LaGue) Mock - ASM '69

Because of the success (and great fun) I have been having locating class members from 1969, I decided to volunteer to be temporary Class Agent for the Sixties Decade! I have always suffered from "Helium Hand" - it floats up to volunteer before my brain can react. Now, my quick little fingers and e-mail can volunteer me and I don't even find out about it until days later!! Kim Cullen quickly accepted my proposal and is looking for others who wish to share in the fun!

Seriously, I do what I can and, although I can make a job bigger than it has to be, I am having a great time. This newsletter will be the way I keep everyone informed about the people who are contacting me. As others volunteer to be Class Agents for the individual years, I will pass along the information that I have accumulated and hopefully that will give them a head start.

If I get a solid lead and an e-mail address I will try to follow up and pass along information I get to other members of the specific classes. I want to thank Jim Karna, Peg Castelli and Omer Pirinccioglu for quickly volunteering to be the Class Agents for their respective years. You make my "job" a breeze! Mega-thanks (make that Giga-thanks) to Peg Castelli for all the help!

Special thanks to Kim Cullen (’91), Alumni Coordinator who has the biggest job of all. Forty years worth of alumni (many of whom were at the school for only a year or two) ... wow!

Everyone should plan ahead for a BIG reunion in 2001 (40th Birthday of ASM)! We could probably end up in the Guinness Book of World Records! Imagine what we could do for hotels, restaurants etc. around Madrid!

Now, without further ado, here are the voices from the sixties:

From Tica Echols Rojo (’70)

This is my 13th year teaching at the American School of Madrid. I am teaching 3rd grade and have taught 4th grade too. It was so funny to come back here since so many of the teachers that we had are still here, although Curbera and Fernandez retired this year. My son will be graduating this year and he had many of the same teachers that I had. He will be the first graduate grandson. I also have a daughter who is in the 4th grade.

After I graduated from ASM, I spent a couple of years in Europe then went to Boston University to finish. Mom in the meantime had moved to Bilbao to teach in the school. I went to visit her and met my husband. She moved back to Northern California and I stayed on. When my son was born we moved to N.Y. and spent three years there. My husband was transferred to Madrid and we have been here ever since. So that is my life in a nutshell.

Write and let me know what you done in the past 20 years. Wouldn't it be great to have a reunion? Do keep in touch.

From Jim Karna (’68)

Thanks for the info. I too have recently been in contact by e-mail with several old friends from ASM on your list below and have already volunteered to be a class rep for the class of '68. Isn't the Internet wonderful?

Keep me posted on your plans for a '69 class reunion. I remember with a lot of fondness the members of the class of '69 and would love to meet them again.

From Peg (Margaret Danos) Castelli (‘67)

I was a part of ASM from its inaugural year (my 7th grade) through my graduation in 1967. My father, Peter Danos, was one of the founders of ASM when it opened as ASM (rather than Betsy Ross). I have all the yearbooks from "back then", and many memories of ASM in its earliest years. The first year, it was expected that about 75 students would enroll; instead, there were about 150! Our location at Dr. Fleming was then across from an open field where we played and had our sports classes. I was there this summer, and it's so very different!

After leaving ASM, I attended the College of Wooster (Ohio), graduating in 1970 with a B.A. in Psychology. I then went on to the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN) where I received my M.A. in Educational Psychology in 1971.

I married Frank Castelli (ASM class of '66) in July, 1971. Frank had also attended the College of Wooster, graduating in 1970 with a B.A. in fine arts. He went on to the Illinois Institute of Technology where he graduated with a B. Arch. in 1974. Frank went to work for Holabird and Root (architects and engineers) right after he graduated, becoming a partner in 1990.

After teaching children with cognitive disabilities and emotional/behavioral disorders for 5 years, I stayed home for many years to raise our 2 daughters. The eldest is now 22 and completing her degree this year in Elementary Education at Indiana University at Bloomington, IN. The youngest (now 20) is a junior Biochemistry major at Harvard University. I returned part time to teaching in 1989 and full time in 1993 in a junior high, working as an inclusion facilitator and study skills teacher.

We live in Western Springs, IL, a small suburb of Chicago, where we have lived for 21 years. We are in close touch with Conchita (Maria) Gonzalez, whom we see about once a year. Let me know if I can add any info of use! Thanks again for your efforts

From Maria (Conchita) Gonzalez (’67)

This is really great that we can start contacting more folks! I currently live in Santa Clara, CA. with my husband, Tom Santos (I kept my maiden name). I work for AT&T in the Network Operations and Training district as a course developer and instructor. I work from home and deliver my training courses primarily to the technicians at our central offices and engineering project managers. I travel about 80% of the time and just so I don't get into any mischief I also am a reserve officer (lieutenant colonel) in the U.S. Army. I am currently assigned to the National Communications Services under FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). My role is to provide liaison with the private sector to restore telecom in disaster areas (i.e. floods, storms, sunamis etc.) for the Pacific rim area and West Coast USA. Needless to say, my counterparts in Atlanta and Florida are plenty busy right now in preparation of Georges hitting the Gulf and Eastern seaboard!

Well, let me know how I can assist in establishing contact with more former ASMers. Wouldn't it be great if we could organize a reunion for the 60s graduates?! What a blast!"

From Arne Mortensen ('65)

Even though I typically would not write about myself, I find myself curious about my classmates, so I figure that I should make a step to provide some information about me.

After ASM, I went to Harvey Mudd College and graduated with a BS in physics in 1969. I went to Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1970 and left there with a PhD in Oceanography in 1976. I practiced very little Oceanography before I switched careers and became a software engineer. Currently, I work for Qualcomm as a VP of engineering, and my current assignment is heading up software development in Chennai, India. I expect to be back in California for good by the end of the year.

On the personal side, I've been married since 1972 and I have four kids varying in age from 25 to 13. The oldest has made me a grandfather twice over... it's hard to imagine how much time has passed ...

From Omer Pirinccioglu (’64)

Thank you for sending me an e-mail. I graduated in 1964. During my senior year I was the class President, Student Council President, Editor in Chief of the yearbook, played in the soccer and basketball varsity team. So I was pretty active but in spite of that, unfortunately, I have lost contact with all my classmates. I did fill out the questionnaire on the ASM web page and am hoping to maybe hear from some old friends. I noticed that I was the first 1964 graduate in the ASM e-mail Directory but, I am sure that others will start discovering the web site soon and start writing.

I live and work in New Hope , PA which is between New York and Philadelphia You are the first ASM student I have heard from since I graduated. It's a great feeling. Thank you. Hopefully this will be the beginning of many others.

I guess that it is only appropriate that I volunteer to be the class agent for '64, as I was the class president back then. So after only 35 years, I will try to bring them back together!

Omer is the Class Agent for 1964 and can be contacted at oprince@capcty.com

From Jim Cotten (’62 - who did NOT attend ASM)

There seems to be a misapprehension by many of your fellow ASMers. I probably would have loved your school but I wasn't a student there. I went to Madrid/Torrejon HS out at Torrejon, AFB. Thanks for the interest. I did and still do love the great city of Madrid, the Prado, the Rastro, Las Cuevas de Sesimo, La Corrida and all. I have run into a few of my schoolmate, "hermanos y hermanas", from MHS. I was in Class of 62'.

(I include Jim's message for your information. If any of you DO know Jim and want his e-mail address, I have it.)
